There’s something undeniably appealing about the blank page and fresh start the new year invites. But before the year wraps up, I like to reflect on the year that has been and write a year-end review.

December is one of my favourite months of the year. Not only because of the festive season but also because it marks the start of the summer holidays in the southern hemisphere and it’s a time to reflect on the year as it comes to a close. It’s also time to start dreaming bigger and bolder for the coming year and life we envision.
For me 2024 has been a true rollercoaster of emotions, a year of gains and losses, growth, learning transformative experiences and valuable lessons. It was a year I say ‘yes’ more—yes to myself and things that matter most to me. I travelled more than I had in years, a reminder to myself how much I enjoy new experiences, connecting with like-minded people, and the rejuvenating power of a change of scenery. I completed my graduate degree in psychology and gathered momentum in my business.
Here are some of my key takeaways from 2024:
- Strength in determination and resilience and vulnerability: the past 12 months were both challenging and rewarding in many ways personally and professionally. I was reminded of the power of determination, perseverance and resilience to keep moving forward when challenges arise. I was also reminded of the power of community and leaning into trusted advisors. Through a mix of grit and support I was able to achieve the major goals I set for myself in the past year.
- Embracing imperfection: I finally learned to let go of the need to be perfect. This year I took on more in my personal and professional life than I anticipated. The truth is I didn’t have time to try and be perfect and although I still worked hard to deliver to a high standard, sometimes ‘done’ is better than stiving for perfection.
- Social media burnout: I will admit it’s often all or nothing with me when it comes to social media. I either use it to engage regularly or I’m not active at all. This year I experienced burnout and I found myself questioning why and how I use it, how much of my life I wanted to put online and what I wanted to share. Moving forward I have set boundaries around my use of social media and I’m making a conscious effort to prioritise quality over quantity, engaging in a way that feels authentic, impactful and meaningful to me.
- Health and wellness: always a top priority for me, this year I aimed for consistency. I simplified my daily routine and created freedom and flexibility which made it easier to include regular movement in my day. I also prioritised rest and recovery and set boundaries around ‘me time’ every Sunday which allowed me to focus on optimising my productive during the week and my health and energy levels.
The Power of Reflection
In addition to a year-end review, I recommend setting aside some time to reflect regularly (monthly or quarterly) to acknowledge and celebrate your wins and also look at any lessons you’ve learned. The reflection process offers a new perspective and an invitation for clarity and intentional focus. I like to think of it as creating a personal road map for moving forward.
There is no set way to self-reflect and I find these following questions a good place to start for a year-end review:
- What did I accomplish?
- Is there an opportunity to further refine my goals
- What am I most proud of?
- What challenges did I face and how did I navigate them?
- What worked well?
- What didn’t work so well and what did I learn?
- Who/what supports me and helps me grow?
- What brings meaning to my life?
- What routines, habits and processes are serving me back and which ones are holding me back?
- What are the highlights of this review period in the areas of career, finances, relationships, health and wellbeing etc?
- Where do you envision yourself in the next month/quarter/year and what will it take?
Looking Ahead
As the new year approaches I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I’m eager to explore new opportunities for growth, connection, impact and engagement. I plan to continue focussing on what works for me and identifying opportunities for refinement and improvement.
Here is to a new year filled with endless possibilities!
